In the 90s, this kind of behaviour was considered quite cool

Rather than that of a preening imbecile.

For me, the crapitude of the nineties is summed up by Noel's House Party, Gladiators, Cotton Eye Joe, Chris Eubank, Steps, EVERYONE wearing combats, The Shamen, Normski, The Word, One Foot In The Grave, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, The slow death of the Tory Party, awful cricket, It's a Royal Knockout etc etc

It felt as though irony still had yet to be invented (or at least refined to its current state) and the whole of the Uk was mired in a dismal amateurism that segued into a chest-beating Cool Britannia wankfest that reached its apex of embarrassment with the delirium of Labour's election victory.

The mid-to-late nineties felt quite good at the time, but then I was in my early twenties and if you can't have fun then, when can you have fun?

Very true. Somehow that doesn't work anymore.
